Television host and socialite Ksenia Sobchak says she gave advance noticeto Vladimir Putin and Alexey Navalny about her presidential campaign, before publicly announcing her intention to seek office. Discussing the matter at a press conference on Tuesday, Sobchak insisted that she didn’t ask anyone’s permission. “I’m an independent person,” she said.
Sobchak announced her plans to run for president on October 18, and says she will consider dropping out of the race, if Navalny is allowed on the ballot. She has also called on the government to release Oleg Navalny, Alexey’s brother, along with theater director Kirill Serebrennikov and RBC journalist Alexander Sokolov — all men widely viewed by human rights workers as political prisoners.
Sobchak has hired Igor Malashenko, the political expert and media manager who ran the “information politics” for Boris Yeltsin’s 1996 presidential campaign. The 1996 campaign is remembered for Yeltsin’s harsh criticism of Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov — especially its infamous “God forbid!” slogan, which warned against the return of Communism.
